Integrating Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Classroom: Steps to Take for Better Representation in Journalism Education

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

In light of recent increases in racially motivated crimes against minorities and growing social justice movements in the United States, journalists are recognizing the need to diversify their own content, sources, and newsrooms. Truly multiperspectival news relies on journalists and newsroom management covering their communities with credibility, balance, nuance, and cultural awareness and sensitivity.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts should not begin in the newsroom, however. Journalism classrooms across the nation must turn their attention to DEI-related subjects in order to better prepare students to be more culturally aware and focused on inclusive journalistic practices. This panel addresses how broadcast educators can work to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in their curriculum.

Panelists will discuss the importance of these efforts for the field of journalism, individual student success (both professionally and personally), and more inclusive campus cultures. The moderator and panelists below will share their experience working with university DEI-related initiatives, incorporating diversity and inclusion in their media classrooms and student newsrooms. Attendees of the panel will leave with suggestions and actionable steps to provide more inclusive curriculum designs for their courses and ways to encourage a DEI focus in their programs, departments, and universities.
